“Once the villages are gone, the culture is gone…”
Help safeguard cultural heritage found in the stilt village of Cheoh Thau Kong, located on the shores of Penang Island, Malaysia. Daily life in the Hokkien Chinese village echoes culture depicted in the 12th century Qingming Shanghe Tu handscroll.
In 2016, Cheoh Thau Kong was razed to make way for high-rise, luxury condominiums.
When a village is demolished, buildings collapse
but what survives the wrecking ball?
Scrolls of Culture, a short subject documentary explores life in the Hokkien Chinese stilt village of Cheoh Thau Kong. The film and its 8 companion multimedia resources (e-books), show that culture does survive demolition and displacement. Your support and donations will help to make their creation possible.
UNESCO has created a world heritage site of clan jetties on Penang Island that aims to preserve tangible culture. This project’s mission is to preserve intangible culture.
Cultural Heritage: the legacy of physical artifacts and intangible attributes of a group or society.
Tangible Heritage: includes buildings, historic places, monuments, and artifacts.
Intangible Heritage: includes oral traditions, language, performing arts, social practices and rituals, knowledge concerning nature and the universe, and craftsmanship.
